isn't the current policy based on availability--you don't actually pick the future date and get issued a new ticket--you show up with your expired ticket on the day you want to go and hope to get in. Fine for people living in NY area and single, not so fine for locals that have to coordinate getting the kids to theater. This allows you to exchange for a specific date in the future, so one can plan on attending. Especially popular shows like Lion King and Alladin that tend to be sold out close to the performance time--so courtesy exchange is rather meaningless. if you buy on ticketmaster, you can get the insurance for cancelling, which might be less than $12.
