I've long wondered. Were Bacharach & David itching to write a song about basketball? Or was the reason librettist Neil Simon changed a ticket to a musical to a ticket to a Knicks game that the zeigeist had already begun to change, reflecting a growing distancing from stage musicals as popular entertainment? Only about 11 years separated THE APARTMENT from PROMISES, PROMISES.
