THE UNDERCLASSMAN is, indeed, a gem. I've been excited about the chance to see this musical, and it lived up to my high hopes. Cara Reichel and Peter Mills have done splendid work on all fronts. The book is intelligent, engrossing, and almost poetic in spots; Mills' score is brimming with superb melodies and clever lyrics. Reichel's direction, ably assisted by Christine O'Grady's choreography, is fluid, elegant, and stylish. THE UNDERCLASSMAN is grandly romantic and, ultimately, heartbreaking and moving. Matt Dengler and Jessica Grove' are terrific as Fitzgerald and his first love, Ginevra King, both bringing depth, strength, and fine voices. I also thought Marrick Smith was a standout, with a sensitive and touching performance as Fitzgerald's close friend, JP Bishop; he does well with the beautiful "A Place Apart," my favorite song in this rich score. This is a wonderful evening of compelling and atmospheric musical theater, given a first rate production. If you have the chance to get a ticket, don't miss THE UNDERCLASSMAN.
