Like it or not, a joyful song from a man about how the woman he is interested in likes musicals would've seemed a little weird. Demographically speaking, women are usually more interested in musicals than men.

I always assumed they changed it because they wanted Chuck to have "wow, we have something in common" moment, and perhaps also because singing a song about going to a musical in a musical might've been too "meta" (not that anyone would've used that term in 1968).

And of course we tend to think (correct or not) that men are more interested in sports than women are. Therefore an added surprise for him that she likes basketball, adding to the emotional reason for the song.

Yeah, absolutely. I know when I played Chuck, I tried for a real moment of surprise when Fran was able to throw basketball stats at me.

I think especially in 1968/69 that Chuck would not have expected Fran to be interested in basketball (or any sport).

As a football-addicted schoolgirl in 1968-69, I know damn well I freaked out all the boys in my class. Hell, I even pitched a FIT when my school held a father-son pancake breakfast at which a Los Angeles Ram running back (one of my faves) was the invited guest. They didn't let me attend, but I got to meet him in private and he signed my scrapbook.

So, yeah, Fran's knowledge marks her as out of the ordinary, and worthy of a great number to celebrate that.

The question for Final Jeopardy right now was "What film shot it's first scene on the first day of shooting on 57th and 5th?". Two people guessed....
