Yes, I wondered the same thing.

In the moment I decided that the story was being presented as an established myth (of the Catholic Church), and so I made a conscious decision to evaluate it as such.

No, I don't think the author believes in these miracles, any more than she believes that an angel appeared to Martin Luther King on the last night of his life (as she wrote in THE MOUNTAINTOP).
