This is something I noticed a long time ago: LuPone's stage performances really really don't transition well to TV.

I was way up in the nosebleed section for "Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall" back in 1992, when she closed the first half with "Being Alive." She absolutely tore the place down: people were standing up and yelling before she even finished singing, and at the intermission nobody was talking about anything else. It was absolutely the highlight of the night, even among a number of other terrific performances.

Then the concert showed up on TV, and LuPone's turn was... very good, well sung. The song was definitely put over. But there was not any sense whatsoever of the rafter-rocking that went on live.
