Thanks for the responses. I seem to think that I preferred the version she did in the Company concert to the one she did in the birthday concert. I thought the birthday-concert performance was awful. On the other hand, I think I was so bored by the Company by the time it got to "Ladies" that I may not have been paying much attention. Only saw both on television. I see no reason why she shouldn't be able to give a good performance of the song if someone directs her in helpful ways. It didn't seem like anyone did that in the birthday concert. While I'm clearly not a fan of her more recent work, she remains a talented woman, no question, who can do good work. She seemed like an amateur doing the song at the birthday concert, at least as it came across in the telecast.
