Condon's 'The Fifth Estate'

Condon's film 'The Fifth Estate' is not a mishap. Anyone who has seen Alex Gibney's doc on the Assange Story - 'We Steal Secrets' - will recognize that 'TFE' is a fine dramatization of the same story, with a knockout performance by Benedict Cumberbatch and rather impressive work by Condon. The film did not do well at the box office - but it has been unfairly maligned. Just because a film asks you to think (God forbid), that doesn't mean it is, as some have said, incomprehensible.

But, speaking of Condon, one thing I don't think I've noticed people bringing up is how different his film of 'Dreamgirls' is from the original Broadway production. The two are almost day and night - apparently just like the original Bway production of 'Side Show' and its current revival. The original stagings of both musicals were sung-through, for one thing. Then, later, they were both re-thought as more standard 'book' stories. ...What, if anything, can it mean?

...has many fine moments, to be sure. But when Jennifer Hudson's Effie is away for that deadly third act, I was reminded when Omar Sharif's gambling put me to sleep in "Funny Girl."
