Also consider the Ted Hughes poem After Moonless Midnight that is referenced. Ted Hughes was the poet Laureate of Great Britain who loved fishing, had a book of poetry River, and was by some considered complicit in the suicides of two women. The whole play is loaded with references that could lead you anywhere from great lost love, modern attempts to achieve intimacy, or a man who uses and discards the women running through his life. I think each person brings their own experience to a play this esoteric.
