Broadway Grosses: Oh, hell, let's call it Autumn, 2014

Posted by: keywslt 06:52 pm EST 11/18/14

I've noticed that this is the third week in a row (maybe fourth) without a "Broadway Grosses" thread. I know fall is a rough time for the box office, and not as much to talk about, but I always look forward to hearing more informed observations here.

What happened to "If/Then"? Huge increase last week, huge drop this week.

"Love Letters" increased $ and % with the cast change from Dennehy/Burnett to Alda/Bergen. That seems surprising to me.

And, elephant in the room, what is likely to happen to "On The Town"? Great reviews, word of mouth here is nearly unanimously good. But poor percentages throughout. With a cast of 30 and an electric bill off the charts, it can't be that cheap to run. And you know they aren't skimping on the Marketing.

In other words, I'm Jones-ing for some BO talk. What's the nut? Who was papered? Which notice is next? Where's the wrap?

I have questions! And they probably aren't even the right ones!

Professors...?

Idina Menzel was out of three performances last week. The box office seems to take an understandable dive when she's out.

Actually, I think things are looking OK for On the Town. Not great, but OK. At least it was comfortably above what the nut has been guesstimated to be.

Interesting that Beautiful is doing so well, only 10K below Aladdin, which is in a much bigger theatre. I don't look at the grosses every week, and even when I do, I don't necessarily pay attention to every show. I have to admit to being surprised that Beautiful is doing so well. Perhaps being in a small theatre really can be a help. I'm the first person to express that idea, I know. And obviously, as noted elsewhere, being in a huge house is hurting On the Town in more than one way.

The show that really seems in trouble for a show that's new is The Last Ship. But that's not news.

Like you, I'm surprised by how well Alda and Bergen are doing.

Why do you focus specifically on the electric bill?

Why do you focus specifically on the electric bill?

All those projections and the LED screens. Those aren't run off the energy created by Tony Yazbeck (although...).

Well, since you ask the direct question, I can't say my crystal ball is at this point showing great Broadway longevity for On the Town--or, for that matter, Side Show either. On the Town's grosses are okay, for the present, but only that, and it (like everything else, of course) has a long winter to survive--and after that, what? Unless it can somehow establish itself as a tourist destination, I don't see where the audience for a long Broadway run is going to come from. Same with Side Show, only more so--its grosses, for the present, aren't even "okay."

Both shows are going to have enormous competition by spring. I believe eight Broadway musicals have been firmly announced to open between January and April, and there may yet be more if theaters become available.

Give it several weeks to see if reviews have an impact and if word of mouth catches on.

On the town should be doing better. It's probably the barn of a theater. Hard to charge premium when you have to offer discounts and comps.

Yes, but the St. James isn't small, either, and again, I don't know where the audiences that would fill it are going to come from. Side Show isn't a family or a "tourist" show, and it hasn't got stars.

Well, time will tell.

Better reviews in DC didn't sell tickets for Side Show in a smaller theater. The original Broadway production got good reviews and didn't run long either. It's a tough sell and if the winter is as bad as predicted, it's got a big challenge ahead.

it doesn't need to run for years

And balcony is closed off wihich helps with seating numbers.

It would be nice to run long enough to guarantee a national tour. The original Side show never toured

The numbers linked (week ending November 16) are for Emma Stone's first week. Michelle Williams' final performance was November 9.

i want to see this again - especially after the bad taste left in my mouth after the last visit. this is one of my favorite revivals of one of my favorite musicals, i'd go once a week if i could. i've done a quick look at multiple dates and good seats are scarce. tickets are moving.

however, having said that, i wasn't going to try just showing up that afternoon and trying to score a decent seat at a decent price with her in it. there are enough seats available now i think i might.

if that doesn't work i'm willing to go ahead and take a chance and buy an advance ticket. taking a chance on michelle williams wasn't an inherently bad idea it just didn't pan out. and since i seem to be doing this a lot today, again, i blame the critics. i think they gave her a pass.

I think I heard Alan Cumming was out for several performances last week, which would have had an effect.

Right.

There's a reason I don't say half of what i'm thinking out loud...let alone on here.

If/Then had an increase last week because of Veteran's Day, and I think Menzel was out for some of this past week.

I'm also surprised that Alda/Bergen seems to be so much more popular than Dennehy/Burnett or Dennehy/Farrow. I think it might be because Dennehy is a great actor, but he's not a household name like the others. Having two household names seems to be the trick (which may be why Stacy Keach/Diana Rigg apparently isn't selling as well).
