| depending on how "scaled back" i'd love to see this. i feel like alw and i have parted ways permanently but SB, especially with her in it, could get be back in a seat. i don't why but it never felt like SB was done "right." i can't really explain that. it would require more thinking than i'm willing to give it but for once scaled back might actually be an improvement. or not. to be honest - just having her in the role would get there. | |

| imo, in spite of the spin usually put on it, it's rarely a good thing. And what happened at THE BANDWAGON? 12 musicians? I thought one of the big trademarks of Encores was the full orchestra treatment. | |

| And I thought another "one of the big trademarks of Encores was" reviving stage musicals. Here was not, however, the Fred and Adele Astaire original version, as seen on B'way. in 1931, but a very different movie adaptation that was itself very heavily adapted by Encores. Of course, the big difference was that the "regular" Encores presentations, as Jack Viertel claims over and over again, are not being mounted in the expectation of a transfer to the Great White Way. BAND WAGON was being done for no other reason than that hope. | |

| But what exactly does he mean by, "And if anyone can play a diva who goes insane, it’s going to be Murphy." Despite what happened during Wonderful Town, I've never heard of Murphy being particularly demanding or unstable. In fact, the people I've spoken with who've worked with her have generally had nothing but nice things to say. Is this just Riedel stirring the pot and taking another cheap shot at a favorite previous target? | |

| It's funny, I didn't read it that way at all... it seems to me like that kind of role is absolutely within Murphy's wheelhouse, and that's all I read into the sentence. Rereading it, I can absolutely see that it could be a dig, but that's not the reaction I had when I first read it. | |

| Yeah, I really just thought he meant that she is good at playing those kinds of characters. She is good at those kinds of characters. I don't know that I'd want to hear her sing that music, but then I don't particularly want to hear anyone sing that music. | |

| Sometimes I am absolutely appalled by the negative things people say in this chat, but I couldn't let this comment go by without an alternate view. I worked with Ms. Murphy twice in Boston, before she hit it big with Passion, Pal Joey at The Huntington and another show at NSMT where I was well regarded in supporting roles. Both times she was extremely difficult to work with, all over everyone else and behaving like a diva. With this said, I admire her work, she is one of the most exciting Broadway performers to come along in years and years. Also very versatile able to play a very wide variety of roles. I would rush to see her as Norma Desmond, she would probably be every bit as great as Betty Buckley, IMO the best of the Normas. | |

| One of my closest friends since college worked with her on a recent (non-theatre) project and raved about her. And I've heard positive things from others too. I'm sure there are other people may have had negative experiences, like yourself. People can change over time, though. | |

| I think this show would profit immeasurably from being scaled down. It's essentially a 3-character piece (plus Betty and "show business" as the fifth character). Doing it small would get back to the seedy claustrophobia of the film source. And Murphy would be excellent. Maybe the man is a role Jarrod Emick (spelling?) should do. That the Roundabout is a "not-for-profit" is a financial distinction. It never need mean that you can't do WOWZA shows. Which this would be. Wowza. I'd love to see it. | |

| I believe it was the one at the link below, from PBS's The Great American Dream Machine in 1971. One take, one long shot. Everyone who directs telecasts of theatre, concerts, opera and dance for PBS nowadays should be strapped into a chair and forced to watch this over and over again until they learn something. I think this was the second time she had performed the song on television, the first time having been on The Tonight Show. | |
