While I don't believe the Ted Hughes referenced poem correlates with The Man being Hughes, there are certainly a lot of shared characteristics between the two. I considered the appearance of The Woman and The Other Woman as possible composites of Sylvia Plath and Assia Wevill, respectively, although I am not that well-versed concerning the latter's personality. I even thought that the two women character's could be showing the duality of Sylvia's personality: New England Puritanical conformity of a 1950's woman vs. a very sensuous nature ("she used men to re-charge her battery" as Rosemary Harris' character describes her sister's relationship with men in "India Ink.") Certainly there was a very symbiotic relationship between Hughes and Plath which ultimately becomes fleeting when he enters into an adulterous affair with Wevill. The Man aspires to this exemplar, fulfilled partnership, well-knowing that it is un-likely to ever be reproduced with another.
