when you are teaching someone how to dress for an event you don't teach what's comfortable you teach what's appropriate.

they aren't the only one wearing ties. plenty of men still dress for the theater but, again, you're confusing the role of the teacher (or parent, whoever is doing g the teaching). if i have student and i've taught him what's appropriate to wear to the theater and he opts (on his own) to go in shorts and flip flops that's his failure. if he shows up dressed like that and is embarrassed because he's underdressed and he's only underdressed because no one taught him any better - that's mine.
