I guess we have different definitions of what's appropriate for the theater. I don't think that ties are required. The only times I've worn a tie to a theater are to opening nights when there's a fancy party afterward. I wouldn't dream of trying to force children to adhere to a "standard" that 99% of adults don't. Teach them to behave at the theater. Teach them to love the theater. But teach them to wear a tie? Ridiculous.
