Lost Lake matinee today

Posted by: bss 05:57 pm EST 11/19/14

What a fiasco! There was an understudy for Tracie Thoms who was out sick today. The poor actress was so unprepared that she shouted "line" at least six times. And each time a voice from backstage yelled the dialog back to her. Not only that, but she carried the script with her throughout most of the play and kept looking down and finally, just gave up and stood on the stage and read directly from the script! We felt sorry for her but, like many in the audience, were angry and appalled that this could have happened. We don't know why or who is responsible, but many of us called MTC to complain. In all my many, many years of theater going, I've never experienced anything like this at least not in a professional production.

Talk about living up to the title. I hope that some recourse will become available.

Strange that she was so unprepared. Even if she hadn't worked with the stage manager on the blocking -- it just opened last week, and such understudy rehearsals are often delayed until after opening -- you'd assumed she was cast months ago.

She was likely only cast very recently. When I saw the show (second week of previews), no understudies were listed in the program.

Got it. Yes, unfortunate.

We really felt sorry for the actress aswe knew it wasn't her fault Someone posted earlier that a performance of Lips together Teeth Apart was cancelled because one of the actors was out sick. Maybe that should have been done in this case. It's certainly not fair to the actor who is performing onstage when not prepared or to the audience who paid good money to see a professional production of a play.

Wow. Talk about a cautionary tale for future MTC SOP. I'm not sure why understudies are not cast earlier in the game. But, as always, follow the money.
