THE SEAGULL (Bedlam) Last Night

Posted by: sergius 09:11 am EST 11/20/14

Of Chekhov's great works, THE SEAGULL is the hardest to play. Bedlam, a terrific group of actors who do wonders with little but their considerable talents and enthusiasm, is performing the most convincing version of this play that I've seen. It's a contemporary adaptation and it works nearly completely. It's jarring at first to have Arkadina (and Medvedenko!) played by attractive young women, but these bold choices somehow exalt your sympathy for the characters. And I have never seen Nina's final scene with Konstantin work as well; it's heartbreaking. Youth is moving in part because it's brief. Chekhov knew this, of course. And so does Bedlam. In this SEAGULL, Bedlam's youthful passion deepens Chekhov's great compassion, and it's stirring.

The recent revival with Carey Mulligan and Kristin Scott Thomas was fairly strong.

Found that revival meh.

Peter Saarsgarrd brought it down with his flat midwestern accent.

But Art Malik's Doctor was a wonderful, nuanced performance.

I am seeing Bedlam's Sense and Sensibility on Saturday.

I wish you hadn't posted this because though I want to see their Seagull, I can only do shows on weekends and it's almost impossible for me to fit the Seagull into my schedule before Dec. 22, when they stop performing.

I understand. There is always so much to see this time of year and much of it only plays until the middle or the end of December. Maybe Bedlam will extend the run of these plays. Probably depends on reviews. My understanding is that Brantley was there--or was supposed to be there--tonight.
