| Pulitzer - Our Lady of Kibeho or Father Comes Home? | |

| In his rave review (link below) of Our Lady of Kibeho in the WSJ Terry Teachout says he thinks it will win the Pulitzer. I'm guessing it will have some competition from Father Comes Home, though Parks already has one. Nice to have some solid contenders this year. | |

| The Pulitzer traditionally favors plays which take up themes which are either explicitly American, or topics that are au courant in our culture. This describes probably 90% of the nominees of the last ten years, and almost 100% of the preceding fifty. On this basis, I'd say FATHER is easily favored. | |

| There are still several new plays to come. Though does the Pulitzer year run from January to December or during the theater season? | |

| I think it's silly to predict these things so far out (unless Teachout is signaling he'll be on the jury!) but for what it's worth, Father Comes Home has the advantage of being about the Civil War (of course I'm aware that they've looked past the "preferably dealing with American life" guideline before...) I honestly don't know what Teachout thinks is "issue-driven" about the play. The Rwandan genocide to come gives it added impact, but it's not really about that event. | |

| I think the issues Teachout is referring to, and admires, is the play's treatment of Christianity. I agree, knowing about the genocide gives that added context, but the play is more about faith and belief than the genocide itself. | |

| Teachout is gratified, and many viewers are surprised, that the play deals straightforwardly and without cynicism with Catholic belief. But I think it's driven by fascination with the story, not by any issue... | |

| I haven't seen enough new American works so fat to really make any calls but it certainly crossed my mind about Our Lady and the Pulitzer. | |

| Father Comes Home From the Wars seems to be a favorite, at least among the chat boards. What else could possibly be in contention? Stephen Adly Guirgus' Between Riverside and Crazy comes to mind, for me at least. | |

| BOOTYCANDY could be a contender, too. My companion at BOOTYCANDY thought so as well. I disagreed because it's too diffuse, also too many dead spots. | |

| I have a feeling that if the Pulitzer jury recommended Bootycandy, the board would veto it. That title - not enough gravitas! | |

| ALL THE WAY—Robert Schenkkan CASA VALENTINA—Harvey Fierstein MOTHERS & SONS—Terrence McNally I can't remember if All the Way had a production the year before. Mothers&Sons might not qualify because of the princeton (I think that is where it was) the year beford. Casa Valentina was new. | |

| Mothers and Sons premiered at Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, PA, in June 2013. Not sure about its eligibility. All the Way is several years old at this point. Despite its compelling premise, I don't think Casa Valentina merits any award as high as a Pulitzer. | |
