I found his performance in the film of THE DESIGNATED MOURNER astonishing. He's just sitting in chair and talking straight at you, and for a great while it seems it's simply Nichols being himself. Then you start to notice the swallowed words, and it slowly dawns how far he's disappeared into his character. (David Hare directed.)
