Of course, his screen highlights include his Oscar-winning film of ''Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,'' starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and his Emmy-winning HBO version of ''Angels in America'' with Al Pacino and Meryl Streep. Back in July, Jack O'Brien interviewed Mike Nichols onstage at the Golden Theatre as part of an HBO special. What an honor and thrill it was to hear Nichols discuss working with the greats; I could've listened to him for hours on end.

Jeremy Gerard of Deadline.com covered that wonderful Nichols-O'Brien evening at the Golden, and here's a link. Gerard adds that Nichols was supposed to film Meryl Streep as Maria Callas in a screen version of ''Master Class.''
