Leave it to Meryl to make a familiar song sound brand new.

One moment I loved was the look on her face when she sang "Princes, yes". I can't remember the backstory of The Witch, but in that moment I saw the pain that Rapunzel's biological father must have caused her. It reminded me of the moment when Brenda Blethyn realizes that Marianne Jean-Baptiste could be her daughter in SECRETS AND LIES. (Not a bad subtitle for INTO THE WOODS.)

I love the little girl approach she's taking in this clip, and the knowledge that it could be a big old acting job on The Witch's part, but it's rooted in a truth that makes even the con job sincere.

And then the ferocity on "What out there that I cannot supply?" that would keep Rapunzel from answering "Romance? Sex? My own child?"

Oh, I hope it's part of a coherent vision overall :).

I wish.

Her vocals are quite good. But her eyes are what sells that song and give it complexity.

It looks gorgeous. And being really able to feel the Witch's vulnerability and arrogance in close-up, and to really hear it in the singing...what an amazing singing actress!!!!
