Decades ago, a friend was walking out of an avant-garde theatre production off-off Broadway. Black turtle necks, minimalist set, thoroughly incomprehensible and pretentious. Behind him was the great Mike Nichols who commented, “Everything in the theater changes. Acting styles...scenic technology...everything. Except the avant-garde. It always stays the same.” RIP to a man who contributed so much to our cultural heritage it boggles the brain.
