A glamorous melancholy ripples through the revival of Edward Albee’s play A Delicate Balance, which just opened at the Golden. You’ve felt it before: enveloping but brittle, at once of crystalline elegance and barely suppressed rage, the type of manner that Albee captures more acutely than any other playwright of relatively recent vintage. And, more important, the type that reflects — all too vividly — the deepest fears within all of us about growing old and being alone or, worse yet, growing old and discovering the partner to whom we’re yoked is no longer helping us to greater heights but is instead keeping us bound to a disintegrating Earth. . . .
