Leave it to Meryl to make a familiar song sound brand new. One moment I loved was the look on her face when she sang "Princes, yes". I can't remember the backstory of The Witch, but in that moment I saw the pain that Rapunzel's biological father must have caused her. It reminded me of the moment when Brenda Blethyn realizes that Marianne Jean-Baptiste could be her daughter in SECRETS AND LIES. (Not a bad subtitle for INTO THE WOODS.) I love the little girl approach she's taking in this clip, and the knowledge that it could be a big old acting job on The Witch's part, but it's rooted in a truth that makes even the con job sincere. And then the ferocity on "What out there that I cannot supply?" that would keep Rapunzel from answering "Romance? Sex? My own child?" Oh, I hope it's part of a coherent vision overall :). I wish.
