Forgive me if I'm telling you something you already know, but the David Lynch movie (which I assume is the one you mean) is not based on the play. It came out not long after the play, and is based on the same characters and events, but it is not based on the play. In fact, the producers of the Broadway production and Bernard Pomerance sued Mel Brooks, trying to prevent him from using the title and claiming damages. But they lost. In fact, I'm not sure it ever even came to trial, it may have been dismissed before it came to trial as being without any sound legal basis.
