The Seldes persona

It is major, and maybe -- and I'm not defending the error whatsoever -- understandable. It's hard to look at the larger-than-life Seldes we all grew to know in the decades since and picture her as the still unformed, neurotic Julia. Her presence and sophistication suggest anyone else in the play (her take on Agnes might've been glorious). So it's a big mistake, but even now, the casting is fascinating. Seldes seldom played the "Julias" of the world. How wonderful that she was honored for it.
