whatever the reason it diminishes the experience for me when they adhere closely. mostly, i think, because one of my objections - to say nothing of my exhaustion and tedium - of the movies-into-musical conveyor belt is that they rely too heavily on the source material. whatever the reason it comes off as lazy.
