ilw, I think all of your theories are cogent. I loved the show at Paper Mill, but I would add to your theories that some people just don't like that brassy, old-style, Vegas-y kind of music. And also, I imagine most people don't expect that kind of music from JRB -- although one would think the title and setting of the show might have tipped them off on what to expect from the score.
