I read they were half full last night, a Thursday, the week after opening. It's distressing, the press has mostly been extraordinary, the raves of the sort that say "unmissable," including the Times.

I do think these producers have deep pockets, and expected a slog. I'm expecting a build through the holidays, but concerned about January - March, the tough sell. Group sales, that's the issue here.

It brings up a bigger point: can people bring older children? I say of course. But we live in a culture that thinks "Mama Mia" might be for kids. and a show about conjoined twins is too adult.

This show isn't "If/Then," it's likely wonderful for many 12 year-olds. But I'm not sure it will be seen that way. It's those winter weeknights, tourists, travelers, theatergoers who don't necessarily choose one "event" show a year. Will they go? I am shadow boxing, since I was startled the show struggled the first time.

The orchestra was full last night. I didn't look up at the mezz, but the theater was not only half full.

For what it's worth, Thursday was a post-opening press night, so there were probably a number of comps in the orchestra.

Without looking up at the mezz, it's kinda hard to judge how full the house is. And even then, how many are comps? I have theater friends who were offered comps just before the opening; I imagine they wanted full houses for the critics.

The original production was the quintessential Times Be Damned poster child. Like its cohort, On the Town, this show has an essentially inexperienced producer, and a bunch of people who may have deep pockets but shallow patience. I think the Thanksgiving weekend is going to tell us what we need to know.

How was it "Times be damned?" The Times gave it a very facorable review back in '97 and again Tuesday morning? I think a more accurate statement would be that the original was "ticket sales be damned."

"Times be damned" in the sense that the ticket buying public was not swayed by either the favorable review or the relentless cheerleading that followed it. I think we are saying the same thing, albeit differently.
