I read they were half full last night, a Thursday, the week after opening. It's distressing, the press has mostly been extraordinary, the raves of the sort that say "unmissable," including the Times. I do think these producers have deep pockets, and expected a slog. I'm expecting a build through the holidays, but concerned about January - March, the tough sell. Group sales, that's the issue here. It brings up a bigger point: can people bring older children? I say of course. But we live in a culture that thinks "Mama Mia" might be for kids. and a show about conjoined twins is too adult. This show isn't "If/Then," it's likely wonderful for many 12 year-olds. But I'm not sure it will be seen that way. It's those winter weeknights, tourists, travelers, theatergoers who don't necessarily choose one "event" show a year. Will they go? I am shadow boxing, since I was startled the show struggled the first time.
