The Playwrights Horizons lottery put hubby and me in the first row, where we almost hit by a rolling plastic drinking glass during an intense late scene in this sweet but not overly sentimental and enjoyable family comedy-drama. T.R. Knight is all puppy dog likability as the manager of a failing Italian chain restaurant in the small Idaho town, where everybody knows everyone else's business--and secrets. Besides financial woes, he has other things to be concerned about: his relationship with his increasingly estranged mother and brother, his employees, and their family issues as well, including a rocky marriage, alcoholism and a rebellious teenager who sees genocide in every restaurant meal. No new territory is mined but that's OK. The play invites you in, and you're only too happy to accept. The cast is capable, from Knight on down. The set is a charming evocation of a faux-elegant dining room where the breadsticks are as stale as the lives of the town's dissatisfied residents.

Thanks, Mamaleh, for the report. I'm going tomorrow night. I generally love Hunter's writing and am looking forward to this one.
