Shirley Knight never opened in it. See the linked history of the production. Or did you already read it and is that why you're asking? She was having trouble in the role. My memory is that Michael Feingold said that some nights she sang well but her acting was off, and other nights her acting was good but her singing was off. She's a great actress, but the night I saw her, neither her acting nor her singing was really what was needed.
