And THAT--your very last line--is the(obviously unscientific)proof that, unfortunately, the show will not have a long run.

I've recovered from the fit of laughing over that last just statement. No show on Broadway would make it past it's first year without a gay audience. If you check the crowd at any show during it's early weeks - there we are. You read the stats Bway auds are primarily women and gay men and this show is built for that demographic.

SideShow has to go thru the standard gestation period Manhattanites and theater fans for the first few months while the bridge and tunnel crowd find it and then finally the tourists. No producer opens in late November without a plan to hang in there until spring. Look at Gentleman's Guide and they did not have Universal and Comcast on their team. Those reviews were beyond glowing shows with lesser pedigree and notices gave themselves time I don't see SideShow not doing the same.

It is my understanding that the balcony is out of play for the run so don't count it in when measuring how full the house is.

No one is saying that gay men aren't a significant part of Broadway audiences. You yourself state that "the stats" demonstrate that it's "primarily women and gay men and this show is built for that demographic." If you take away the women, it's not going to work.
And no matter what producers intend, are you saying that no show that opens in November closes before the spring?

First of all the measure of an audience's demographic can not be made by the mens room line. That's an old joke about Broadway and means more about the aging of a key demographic and effect of the cold on their bladders. There are many women in the audience.

Many a fall show can close quickly but the overall attendance numbers are predictable year over year week to week and only those with "names" can come in assured that they will be selling out from day one. I am saying that the producers are not new to this game or the data - no one would give up on a show with the reviews this one got - they just need to do the marketing and bring the audience to the show. Give it time, the reviews just came out.

I certainly don't hope that any show closes, least of all this one(or LAST SHIP, which I saw and liked very much, albeit with the common significant reservations about the book). I sincerely hope the producers know what they're doing, do the marketing(not easy with SIDE SHOW), get the audiences, give it time and have deep enough pockets.

All the same, I can't help but be influenced in my thinking by the absence of lines at the box office--or for the bathroom!
