>It was so not right in this day and age...<

But GIGI was not written to be about "this day and age". That's pretty clear by the music and dialogue and costumes and sets and of the film. Granted, it was written in the late 50s, just previous to a decade when the social status of women was about to undergo a huge change. But are things really THAT different today? Are young girls today not bombarded with images of hot, sexy, idealized women and subliminally (and not so subliminally) told this is what they should aspire to, what is expected of them? I don't find the basic ideas of GIGI all that hard to understand and imposing a modern slant on the material is basically trying to make it into something it isn't. I also think the sheer stylishness of presentation and visual beauty of the film is a major component of the story and not one that can be easily transferred to the stage.

Especially if they watched Brittney and Miley change overnight from Disney to vixen.
