I agree - it is a meaningful revision. It is my understanding that the PR folks must first get the approval of the quoted critic before making that sort of word adjustment.

Wasn't it actually "fall season..."?

Meaning, come January, its inherent essentialness wanes? I think the quotation's amendments are still within the spirit of Isherwood's recommendation: go see this show, musical theater lovers. If you place it in context, the context only enhances the fervor in the admonition to theatergoers. It's not a case where a few words selected from a lukewarm review are used to suggest a passionate endorsement. Isherwood's passion is throughout his review, no question; the quotation reflects the overall embrace of the show.

You are correct. The quote was "an essential ticket of the fall season." And the pull quote is certainly within the spirit of the review, but why did they feel the need to change "an" to "the"? To me, it changes the meaning a bit more than omitting the word "fall".

The pull quote is doubly tricky. Changing "an" to "the" definitely alters the meaning. And taking out "fall" makes it sound like it's "the" essential ticket of the entire theater season, which is a full year.

"...And it's just a wonderful musical..."

"...This beautiful and wrenching musical...burrows deep into your spirit. As portrayed with layered complexity — and pin-you-to-your-seat vocal chops — by Erin Davie and Emily Padgett, the Hilton twins embody an essential truth about the human condition: On some level we are forever divided in our desires and, life being what it is, thwarted in at least some of them. Also: It’s just a wonderful musical..."

"Whether this adventurous musical will find more love this time around is an open question, but for my money it’s an essential ticket of the fall season..."

To me, we are perhaps over-parsing the strongest possible recommendation: that this is unmissable. Look at his entire review, judge for yourselves. To me, the entreaty to buy a ticket feels a very strong part of his message.

Again, I don't disagree with the assessment that the review is a 100% rave. And personally, I loved the show. I certainly am not making an argument that the quote is out of context, in a way that misleads an observer about what Isherwood thougt of the show. In fact, I'm not making an argument at all. I was just asking whether or not, in the world of marketing, this is an "acceptable" alteration.

Yes, it was a rave. But you can quote accurately from a rave rather than distort it to make parts of it sound even better.

True. And this comes on the heels of promoting a live Act I finale simulcast in Times Square, which was really taped.
