I am also sure that Lahr knows that Nichols did not direct every Simon comedy, and he didn't say Nichols had directed every Simon comedy. I quoted him saying that Simon "engineered all of the hit [emphasis added] comedies of Neil Simon," and I assume he knows that's not true. I just wonder why he wrote something that is not even close to being true. I probably would not have posted anything about it if kieran hadn't also posted about another error in the piece.

Nichols directed five Simon plays on Broadway, four of which were hits. (He took over on Fools but couldn't make it a hit.) Gene Saks directed the original Broadway productions of seven Simon plays (eight if you count the female Odd Couple as a new play). Except perhaps for the female Odd Couple, I think they all paid off (although a couple were probably marginal). One of the ones he directed was Brighton Beach Memoirs, which had the second-longest run of any Simon play or musical on Broadway (trailing only Barefoot in the Park and a tiny bit ahead of Promises, Promises).

Assuming that everyone is not as knowledgeable as you and I, it's a misleading statement in what I described as a "lovely and sad and touching" remembrance.
