I agree with you, AlanScott, and thank you for pointing out the lapse. For my money, Lahr is still the best, most authoritative and knowledgeable critic writing about the theatre today. It pains me when someone of his calibre makes a misstep and there were a few in his recent bio of Tennessee Williams. But given how long it took to bring the book to publication, I was willing to cut him some slack.

But remember, FleetStreetBarber, that 35 years ago Sondheim had to protest Lahr giving SWEENEY TODD a scathing put-down--without having seen the show! And Lahr's response was tepid. Sondheim tells the story in FINISHING THE HAT(2010).
