SIDE SHOW Soars..But Should Daisy Be More Grateful?

Posted by: BroadwayMagic 09:20 pm EST 11/23/14

I love the new revisal of SIDE SHOW and am planning to go back and take my mother on December 21
but Peter Filichia's column on Friday raised some interesting issues. This critic thinks that when Daisy finds out that Terry won't marry her, she should say, “I understand, Terry. I know I’m asking a lot. So no hard feelings. Let me instead thank you for taking me and Violet away from the freak show and getting us into vaudeville. You made our lives so much better than they were, and I’ll always love you for it.”

Great point! What do other people think? I provided a link to his article.

No, she shouldn't.

The central conflict in this version of SIDE SHOW is the twins ("normal people in an abnormal situation") vs the world ("they're freaks").

Thus, in this telling, Terry betrays Daisy in the deepest possible way, by revealing that in spite of everything he still sees her as a freak. For her to instantly forgive him might be a great tearjerking moment, but it would probably ring false in a show that's already got built-in problems with suspension of disbelief.

I have not seen this production, but, in the original, Daisy is shown to be truely in love with Terry, all the more so because he seems able to look past her obvious issues and love her back (the audience is privvy to his doubts all along the way, but she is not).

So it's more a case of Daisy dealing with a broken heart, which, of course, knows no logic or reason.

in the original, Daisy is shown to be truly in love with Terry

Not the case this time. One of the ways we are told Daisy and Violet differ is that while Violet wants affection from one specific man, Daisy isn't so particular.
