Okay, a quick flop. Regardless, his name didn't make a hit, even much closer to the height of his popularity.

I still think there's some truth to the idea, expressed by Goldman in The Season, that young people age into theatregoers. So that if Sting starred in something now, he might do better.

But I don't think that his taking a supporting role in The Last Ship will have much box-office effect at this point.

If he could sing it, and wanted to do it, I bet he could sell as Sweeney Todd. Or another leading role that might suit him. But a supporting role in The Last Ship, no.

We shall see soon enough but I think Sting will likely have the desired effect. If you figure he enters the show with a million dollar deficit (that's a bit high, but it's a round number), that means that they need an increase of 200k a week to break even. That's not a lot of fans for someone who can fill MSG. I think they will double that, maybe more. And if they can generate Billie Joe Armstrong level sales, that gives them a decent cushion to ride out the winter and then make it to the Tonys, at which point who knows? Incidentally, you may think it is a supporting role but the ads are already out and they say Sting Stars in The Last Ship.

Well, if the ads say that, then people are going to be disappointed with how much he does in the show, unless the role is expanded for him.

Which perhaps it will be.

But it will never be a starring role.

An increase of 200K seems plausible. Perhaps you're right and it will be double that. We'll see.

I don't see how they could reasonably expand it. Had the said "See Sting in Plenty" or some such it would have been fine; when I saw the word "stars" I nearly had to re-eat my lunch. Sorry, but that's the truth lol.

I discussed this question of whether the role might be expanded earlier today with someone. I don't know Sting's work well enough to be able to suggest a specific song that might be added, but it does seem to me that it might not be a bad thing to give that character a scene with his wife that might lead to a song, either a solo or a duet. I don't think it would necessarily stretch the show out of shape, and it would at least be a bit more.

Or if there was nothing in his catalog that would be suitable, it's not so inconceivable that something could be written.

That doesn't mean that it's likely to happen. I just think it might be a good idea. And it would make folks coming to see the show to see him happier.
