It was late in their life and they had accepted and become used to their conjoined lives. Their bodies may have survived the separation but they didn't feel their souls could. I may be putting it a bit poetically, but you can understand what they meant. As poor as they were and by then forgotten, they said their happiest times were in that small town where an unscrupulous manager had left them stranded. Strangers cared for them better than friends, family, managers, and guardians ever had.
