White Christmas US Tour Director

Posted by: dlittle 08:47 pm EST 11/24/14

I saws the tour of White Christmas in Pittsburgh last week. It was delightful and a welcome distraction from life on that particular day...:)

I was wondering, however, why I could find no mention of Walter Bobbie anywhere in the playbill, or on the website. I know that he doesn't personally oversee the show anymore. Randy Skinner is listed as director and choreographer. However, what I saw, seemed very similar to what Walter Bobbie helped develop, at least the clips that I've seen online (I didn't get to see it in it's original productions around the country or on Broadway). Even the production in London mentions Bobbie as the "original production director" and Morgan Young as the "UK production director." Why is there no mention of the work that Bobbie has done in terms of what led to the current US tour? Can anyone shed some light on this?

I don't know if this will help. I believe the London production and the UK tours have pretty much been an exact replication of the original US production - sets, costumes, blocking, choreography, etc.
The American tour for the past 3 years has used a combination of two different sets by two different designers and has resulted in different blocking and staging. Also, to my knowledge (and I'm not a professional), direction goes way beyond blocking and involves different takes on how a scene is played or not played and how the actors are guided in the scenes. So even if things appear similar because of memories of sets and costumes, the show on a whole could have many changes that would be noticeable if you could compare everything side by side.

Also - there may have been a contractual agreement in the London production with Mr. Bobbie that his direction be replicated and he receives some kind of billing. That might not be the situation in America.

That makes sense. And I assumed it must be something like that. I could tell that the sets were not exactly alike in the touring version and the Broadway version. However, it still seemed close enough to me that a mention of Walter Bobbie's contributions would be merited. I guess not.
