THE INVISIBLE HAND Tonight (Possible Spoiler)

Posted by: sergius 11:02 pm EST 11/24/14

In THE INVISIBLE HAND, an American stockbroker is held captive in Pakistan by terrorists, his life threatened unless he can earn his own ransom by trading. If this seems improbable, recent events suggest otherwise. This is another taut, compelling play from Akhtar. It describes international finance theory as if it were akin to, and in a sense, a variety of religious belief. It doesn't sound very interesting, but Akhtar writes compact dialogue and in a series of cracking, topical scenes, he convinces that, as one character has it, religion isn't the opiate of the masses, money is. The production is top tier; very well acted and directed, it incorporates a particularly effective and subtle sound design that greatly helps to describe the context in the action takes place. If the market is, ostensibly, self-regulating--controlled by a so called invisble hand--you wouldn't know it from the proceedings this play details which is precisely Ahtar's sorry point. Of his three plays, THE INVISIBLE HAND is the best produced and, arguably, the most convincing.
