Due to an enthusiastic reception, Berkeley Repertory Theatre is proud to announce that the show will extend for an additional week. In the one-woman show, Turner is all smarts and sass as beloved journalist and humorist, Molly Ivins. Written by twin sisters Margaret Engel and Allison Engel and directed by Obie Award winner David Esbjornson, this acclaimed production captures the red-headed reporter’s indomitable character by weaving personal anecdotes with her colorful take on national politics. Originally scheduled to close Sunday, January 4, Red Hot Patriot now plays through Sunday, January 11, 2015. Individual tickets start currently at $39 and can be purchased by phone at (510) 647-2949 or online at berkeleyrep.org. Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins had its world premiere in 2010 at the Philadelphia Theatre Company, where Turner originated the role. Now, Turner has won the hearts of Bay Area audiences in this moving tribute to one of America’s greatest voices. “A love-fest… Turner — a solid presence in blue denim work shirt, jeans and flaming red hair — delivers her lines with a half-gracious, half-defiant Texas twang and timing that makes the wit land with comic precision.. Most of the words are by Ivins, and they had the audience roaring with laughter,” proclaims San Francisco Chronicle. “Turner exudes charm and self-assurance as Ivins, the staccato rhythm of her breathy diction landing deftly on the punch lines… What really comes across is the aforementioned "kick-ass wit" of Ivins in one pithy zinger after another,” declares Bay Area News Group. ############################ On “Giving Tuesday”, Lucky Penny Productions has announced that fundraising efforts have generated over $100,000 to date for the new Community Arts Center in Napa, putting the project past the one-third mark in pursuit of the total project funding goal of $275,000. “We have made great progress working together, in spite of the earthquake, but now we really need a push to put us over the top,” said Lucky Penny co-founder Taylor Bartolucci. “Many individuals and groups have contacted us and are looking forward to putting the space to use, and we’re asking the community for help now to get the project completed.” The Community Arts Center project was announced March 9, 2014. A lease for space at 1758 Industrial Way was signed in July, and the multi-purpose, all-ages facility has been under renovation since that time. When complete, the Community Arts Center will provide an accessible and affordable place for education, training and performance /presentation of many kinds of arts. It will also be home to Lucky Penny’s theater productions and a new project-based learning program under the Napa Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA). The first production to be presented in the new Arts Center will be "Oliver!", the beloved musical based on Dickens' Oliver Twist, running Jan 23-Feb 1, 2015. The NEA has recommended that BACT receive a grant of $10,000 to help develop and produce an original musical inspired by stories created by children with special needs. “We are thrilled to have been honored with this NEA grant, which recognizes our commitment to creating new work and to representing the stories of all children on our stages,” said BACT Executive Director Nina Meehan. BACT will work with playwright and composer Min Kahng to create the new musical. Kahng most recently wrote and composed BACT’s award-winning musical adaptation of Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. The creation process will begin with a series of workshops in partnership with schools and organizations that serve children with special needs. BACT will lead dramatic workshops with the children to help them find and express their creative voice and storytelling skills. Kahng will use selected stories from the children as inspiration for a musical, which will be performed by professional actors during BACT’s 2016-2017 season. “It has been a dream of mine to offer sensory-friendly performances to children with special needs,” Meehan said. “This NEA grant helps us take that dream even further, by representing the voices of children with special needs on our stages. We will be working hard in the months ahead to secure the additional funding required to bring this exciting project to fruition.” Announcing the NEA grants, NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, “I’m pleased to be able to share the news of our support through Art Works, including the award to the Bay Area Children’s Theatre. The arts foster value, connection, creativity and innovation for the American people, and these recommended grants demonstrate those attributes and affirm that the arts are part of our everyday lives.” Art Works grants support the creation of art, public engagement with art, lifelong learning in the arts, and enhancement of the livability of communities through the arts. The NEA received 1,474 eligible applications under the Art Works category, requesting more than $75 million in funding. Of those applications, 919 are recommended for grants, for a total of $26.6 million. ############################ OREGON SHAKESPERE NEWS OSF Receives National Endowment for the Arts Grant $80,000 grant will support performances of Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land and surrounding events —The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) has been awarded an $80,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support the 2015 U.S. premiere of Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land. OSF is one of 919 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant, which will help fund 73 performances as well as surrounding education and audience engagement events for Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land, a hugely popular play in China and Taiwan by Taiwanese playwright Stan Lai, who also translated the play into English and will direct at OSF. NEA Chairman Jane Chu said, "I'm pleased to be able to share the news of our support through Art Works, including the award to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The arts foster value, connection, creativity and innovation for the American people and these recommended grants demonstrate those attributes and affirm that the arts are part of our everyday lives." “Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land is an example of how art can transcend borders, languages and time and speak to the core of our common humanity,” said OSF Executive Director Cynthia Rider. “It is an honor and an affirmation of the significance of this international collaboration to be recognized and supported by the NEA and also by our theatre peers from across the country who served who served on the grant review panel.” Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land will run April 15-October 31, 2015, in the Angus Bowmer Theatre. The production is garnering high levels of support and enthusiasm among donors and sponsors. Among them are the show’s Producing Sponsors, Judy Shih and Joel Axelrod, who have played a key role in bringing Lai and Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and whose financial support of the play represents the largest gift OSF has ever received for a single production. Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land is also the recipient of a $125,000 Creative Heights grant from the Fred W. Fields Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation. Art Works grants support the creation of art, public engagement with art, lifelong learning in the arts, and enhancement of the livability of communities through the arts. The NEA received 1,474 eligible applications under the Art Works category, requesting more than $75 million in funding. Of those applications, 919 are recommended for grants for a total of $26.6 million. Since its founding by Angus Bowmer in 1935, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival has grown from a three-day festival of two plays to a major theatre arts organization that presents a nine-month season consisting of 11 plays that represent a mix of Shakespeare’s canon, classics, musicals, and new works. Inspired by Shakespeare's work and the cultural richness of the United States, OSF believes we reveal our collective humanity through illuminating interpretations of new and classic plays, deepened by the kaleidoscope of rotating repertory. | |
