SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA THEATRE CRITICS CIRCLE
ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF FOUR SPECIAL AWARDS
In addition to the 60+ performance award categories for excellence in Bay Area productions in 2014, the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle also presents four Special Awards, including a new award recognizing outstanding work early in an artist's career. The SFBATCC is proud to announce the following recipients, who will be presented their awards at the 39th Annual Excellence in Theatre Awards Gala to be held at San Francisco's Victoria Theatre on Monday, March 9, 2015.
The Paine Knickerbocker Award is named for the former theatre critic of The San Francisco Chronicle and is presented to an organization that has made a continuing contribution to Bay Area theatre.
This year we honor Pear Avenue Theatre.
The 2014 Award goes to Mountain View's Pear Avenue Theatre.
The Jerry Friedman Award is named for the KGO Radio theatre critic who served as SFBATCC president for 22 years. This is a lifetime achievement award given to an individual who has furthered the creativity and growth of theater in the Bay Area throughout his/her career.
This year we honor Margie Belrose of the Belrose Theatre in San Rafael.
Ms. Belrose has spent decades as an actress, director, and mentor to both neophyte and veteran actors, and has mounted countless productions in her theater, a charmingly repurposed old church. The Belrose Theater is also home to one of the largest and most varied costume shops in the North Bay, and has long served as a source for theater companies throughout the region.

The Gene Price Award is named for the former arts editor and long-time theatre critic of the San Francisco Bay Times and honors a person who embodies superlative professionalism and passion for Bay Area theatre.
This year we honor Marga Gomez.
The multi-talented Ms. Gomez is the author and performer of eleven solo plays, many of which have been produced nationally and internationally. Prior awards include a GLAAD Media Award for Off-Broadway Theatre, a Los Angeles Ovation Award for Best Featured Actress, a 2010 Bay Area Critics Circle Best Performance Award and three SF Bay Guardian's "Best Comedian" Awards.

This year, the SFBATCC introduces The Annette Lust Award, named for the late Dominican University professor and longtime Critics Circle member. In keeping with Dr. Lust's enthusiasm for new plays and her lifelong encouragement of fledgling playwrights through her "Fringe of Marin" festival, the Annette Lust Award is given to promising new theatrical talent.
This year we honor Dezi Gallegos.
Mr. Gallegos dazzled critics and audiences alike as the writer/director of Hamlet's Orphans, which debuted in the Studio Theater at 6th Street Playhouse in Santa Rosa. Gallegos also appeared in his one-man show God Fights the Plague at the Marsh in San Francisco, a venue famed for showcasing works in development.
