"I imagine when Gyllenhaal and Stone booked Broadway, they couldn't assume that their films would be so involved in awards season." Maybe they couldn't, but their agents could. I'm sure they each had several negotiated absences in the event of awards shows. It puts the theatre company in the unlikely position of being frustrated they have to cancel performances (and scramble for make-goods, like the Thursday matinee of Constellations that was apparently added this week)), but hoping that the awards shows, even while promoting the stars' other vehicles that they're nominated for, will bring attention to the stage work. Constellations will be an interesting test case, since I would think that the double-whammy of Ruth Wilson deservedly winning the Golden Globe the other night, combined with the pretty much unanimous rave reviews this morning, should sell out that show for most of the rest of its run.
