This uncensored, highly charged one-man tour-de-force is a hilarious and impassioned examination of the corrupting influence of money and the pursuit of happiness. Directed by his long-time collaborator Margarett Perry, performances begin on January 27 at The Playroom Theater (151 West 46th Street – just east of Broadway). Opening night is set for Monday, February 9 at 7:00pm. In this wildly funny theatrical event, Dykstra questions everything from the corrupting influence of money to the pursuit of happiness in a powerful performance that blends stand-up, storytelling, slam poetry and down-home preaching. This show is anything but safe and will make you think as hard as you laugh. The production team for Brian Dykstra $elling Out is: David L. Brian Dykstra $elling Out was originally commissioned and produced by Kitchen Theatre Company, Ithaca, NY (Rachel Lampert, Artistic Director). Bios Brian Dykstra (Author/Performer) is an actor, playwright and HBO Def Poet. Last season he played Rooster Byron in Jerusalem at The San Francisco Playhouse, Leonard in Seminar at the Kitchen Theatre and Brian O’Regan on Broadway in Lucky Guy with Tom Hanks directed by George C. Wolfe. His play Clean Alternatives received its world premiere Off-Broadway at 59E59 Theaters and went on to win the Fringe First Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It also won the New Hampshire Theatre Award for Best Original Production (Yellow Taxi Productions). Brian is a regular at the Kitchen Theatre in Ithaca, seeing productions of his plays The Two of You, Strangerhorse, The Jesus Factor, A Play on Words, Ho! (his one man holiday show for adults) and most recently, Brian Dykstra Selling Out. Hiding Behind Comets received its world premiere at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park during its 2004 Tony Award-winning season and was awarded the National Theatre Conference Playwright Award. It received an extended run Off Broadway at 29th Street Rep and has had productions from Boston to Eureka, CA to Birmingham, Alabama. Forsaking All Others received a sold-out run in London at Pentameters Theater and has also seen productions in Los Angeles and NYC. Other Off Broadway productions include: A Play On Words (59E59), Silence (At Hand), Spill The Wine (GayFest) and Ho! (Drilling Company). Recent acting credits include Mark Rothko in Red at St. Louis Rep, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and B Street Theater. Walter in The Price (B Street), Mike in Good People (Dorset Theatre Festival), Gus in Call Me Waldo (Working Theatre), Elyot Chase in Private Lives (Kitchen), Trigorin in The Seagull (American Repertory Theatre), Oscar in The Little Foxes (Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey) and Claudius in Hamlet (Northern Stage). Brian’s solo show The Jesus Factor received an extended Off-Broadway run at The Barrow Street Theatre and is out on DVD (UpRoar Entertainment). His first solo show, Cornered & Alone, was hailed by critics, but landed him on several watch-lists including the NRA and Rush Limbaugh. Notable TV & film credits include: HBO’s “Def Poetry,” “Third Watch,” “Law & Order,” “Chappelle’s Show,” (718), Corn, Spectropia, Another Bed, Freedomland, Knight & Day and he just finished shooting Poor Behavior written and directed by Theresa Rebeck. Recent Off-Broadway world premieres include Call Me Waldo by Rob Ackerman (The Working Theatre), First Prize by Israela Margalit (Arclight), The Body Politic by Richard Abrons (59E59), and Mother Tongue by FJ Hartland (Abingdon). Perry is a regular at The Kitchen Theatre in Ithaca where she has directed numerous productions including Seminar, The Motherfucker With The Hat, Cock, Private Lives and world premieres by Rachel Axler, Brian Dykstra, Rob Ackerman, Darian Dauchan and most recently the sold-out run of Brian Parks’ The House. Perry is also a regular at the Human Race Theatre Company in Dayton, Ohio where she has directed Other Desert Cities, God Of Carnage, Painting Churches, The Retreat From Moscow and the world premiere of Michael Slade’s Under A Red Moon. Her HRTC productions have won DayTony Awards for Best Overall Production and Best Ensemble, among others.
