Delvino, I'm so glad that you were moved and entertained by ''The Last Ship.'' I've gone each time with a different friend, each sort of reluctant to go and afraid that a story about unemployed shipyard workers would be too depressing. Of course, ''The Last Ship'' is about much more than that: making peace with your parents; trying to rekindle an old romance; finding your place in the world, etc. And each of my friends LOVED the show and were blown away by the amazing cast and Sting's score.

Left to their own devices, my friends said they would've never caught ''The Last Ship.'' And these are musical-theater LOVERS. They were expecting a downer. And yet the show also has humor, rousing dances and spirited songs. Not to mention inspired work by Michael Esper, Rachel Tucker, Collin Kelly-Sordelet, Aaron Lazar and Sting himself.

As ''Memphis'' and ''Gentleman's Guide,'' both original musicals that opened in the fall, have shown: It can take time for a new show to establish itself. Sadly, ''The Last Ship'' will float away before many gave it a chance to sail into their hearts.
