Hardly a given.

Like most people (and critics), I rather liked the film version of ITW. It's a word of mouth success, not exactly "doesn't work at all".

But I'd never seen ITW on stage, and only judged what I was watching on the screen. Unlike many ATCers (and you I suspect) I didn't judge it on what number was cut, how it compared to the Broadway version, etc.

Sondheim has made it clear he's quite happy with the film, and frankly, his opinion carries infinitely more weight than yours.
