In the infancy of the war, Iraq is already filled with ghosts. The lives of four U.S Marines, a French reporter and four Iraqis are forever changed after an errant mortar round kills a child during the rush to Baghdad. Phantoms haunt the people of a burning Baghdad, trying to prevent the bloodletting to come, and as Sadaam’s statue falls in Firdos Square, the Marines and Iraqis are forced together in a moment which will test their humanity, empathy and potential for forgiveness.

The cast features Ali Andre Ali, Victory Chappotin, Fahim Hamid, Ankur Rathee, Temesgen Tocruray, Nabil Viñas, Perri Yaniv, and Katherine Zaffrann.

The design team includes Paul DePoo III (scenic design); Brad Peterson (lighting and video design); Liene Dobraja (costume design); Jamie A. Dias (sound design); and Travis Bell (properties design). Jessica Barnhill is the assistant director. The production manager is Ori Bensimhon. The stage manager is Abby Vincent.

Maurice Emerson Decaul is a former Marine, a poet, an essayist and playwright whose work has been featured in the NY Times, The Daily Beast, Sierra Magazine, Barely South Review, Epiphany and others. Maurice’s poems have been translated into French and Arabic. Maurice has been a recipient of a Callaloo Creative Writing Workshop Fellowship and his collaborations with noted poet and performer Mike Ladd and composer Vijay Iyer have led to the creation of two poetry based docu-concerts: Holding It Down and Sleep Song which have premiered in New York City and Paris respectively. His play Lioness premiered at the INTERSECTIONS FESTIVAL 2014 in Washington D.C. He is a graduate of Columbia University and is currently working towards his MFA at New York University.

Alex Mallory (director) is a theatrical director, producer, and creative leader in NYC. She is Co-Artistic Director of Poetic Theater Productions, Senior Producer with the Veteran Artist Program, curated the Women Center Stage 2013 Festival at Culture Project, and recently began working as a Project Manager for Mara Manus at Manus+Co. Upcoming: There Are No Camels in Beirut by Ashley Marinaccio and a play in development about playing basketball in a revolution.

Now in its fourth year, Poetic License is Poetic Theater Productions’ annual festival of new poetic theater, which has grown from five days to three weeks, features two fully realized mainstage productions of thrilling new poetic plays written by company members, a reading series of six new works of poetic theater, and three special events: Love, Redefined, an evening of new work devoted to non-traditional love; Breaking Our Silence, a celebration of LGBT voices; and Generation Now, a showcase of youth voices in poetic theater.
