I think the obstacles are more than just how they get together and on whose terms. If they grew up together and she's 18 and he's just a couple of years older, the story sounds likely to become a lot less interesting.

We like to think that we're more adult and sophisticated in 2015 than we were in 1958, and yet . . .

. . . If we are, it seems to sometimes mean that our entertainment needs to be less adult and sophisticated because we're more put off by certain implications that most people (presumably) overlooked in the past.

But I should clarify something about the post of mine to which you first responded: The reasons why I think this is a bad idea go beyond the specific changes reportedly being made to the work. I just think not that many people are going to want to see this show. And I think this particular musical, like many other movie musicals, is not particularly adaptable to the stage (as its earlier stage history seems to suggest).

If it is to work on the stage, it probably should be done intimately, but John Dexter tried that in London in the 1980s and that doesn't seem to have worked too well either.

If it's a success, I will happily admit that I was wrong.
