What audiences feel and what Sondheim says - hmm . . .

The movie is clearly doing very well at the box office, but it is an odd case in that it's not so clear that word of mouth is good. I'm linking the Rotten Tomatoes page on the film. Compare its ratings there to that of some other current movies (there are links on the page) and it ranks pretty low in terms of favorability. Obviously, this does not prove anything except that a lot of people who frequent the site aren't liking it a lot, but . . . they are liking other current movies.

I think what Sondheim says tells us very little about what his real feelings may be. He's going to promote it, he's going to say it's great.

A few months before the film version of Night Music was released, he said on television how fabulous Liz Taylor's singing was. He wasn't asked about it. He brought up the subject.

Privately, he wasn't saying such good things.

And even if he does think that's great, we don't have to agree. (Not that you said we have to agree.)

He said in an interview with Frank Rich that the film version of Sweeney was "the most satisfying version of a stage piece I've ever seen." I certainly don't feel the same way about that movie. I can't help but wonder if he is simply seeing what he wants to see.

As David says in Company, "You see what you look for, you know." Of course, Sondheim didn't write that.
